The "Doug Box": Setup
Each photo at the right corresponds with the appropriate step.
Step 1
Place the bolts through the flash mounting plate (the flat "L-shaped" silver colored aluminum part). Use the flat washers between the head of the bolt and the mounting plate. Next comes the long square shaped soft box mounting arm. Place the black plastic spacers between the mounting arm and the mounting plate. Use the Wing Nuts on the inside of the soft box (so as not to scratch your flash).
Step 2
Use the universal clamp to attach the soft box to your light stand. You will notice that there are two slots in the round part of the clamp. Place the square mounting arm in the square hole. Tighten the black handle. Loosen the handle to tilt the soft box forward and backwards.
Step 3
Using a flash with a pc connector, like the Nikon SB 800, mount the flash on the flash mount adapter. This is on top mini ball head. The ball head is used to turn the flash so that eye on the side or front of the flash is pointed at the camera when using the TTL mode of the flash/camera system. If you are not using the TTL function you do not need to use the ball head. Mount the flash mount adapter directly to the mounting plate.
Step 4
With a flash that doesn't have a pc connector, like the Canon 580EX and a Pocket Wizard, you will need a way to trigger the flash through the hot shoe. I recommend the Paramount PW-MHSF1, available at camera stores or directly from Paramount for $44.50.
Step 5
The screw about half way down the mounting arm is used to mount the pocket wizard to the set up.
Step 6
You can mount almost any type of flash to the flash mounting plate. Here I am using the Quantum Q flash. Simply mount the flash directly to the flash mounting plate.
